MESSAGES FROM THE TRIO

From the District Director – Doretha Pair, DTM

District 66,

Congratulations on your work so far this year. Let’s finish strong. We are sprinting towards the road to Distinquished District. We have 74 paid clubs and need 77. We need about 100 payments and 12 more Distinguished Clubs. We can do it if we all work together. I encourage you to get in those educational goals and invite your family and friends to join Toastmasters.

The theme for this year is “Together, we are Stronger”. Let’s push each other and sprint to the finish line together. I am also challenging as many members as possible to get a Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is presented when you finish three or more levels in a program year.

Thank you all for your participation and attendance at the 2026 District Conference in Charlottesville.

The final event for this year will be the District 66 Farewell Celebration to be held at Genworth- Glen Allen on Saturday, June 20th, from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM. Come out and see which clubs and Individuals will receive an award.

Program Quality Director, Marilynn Vaughan

Two New Years, One Vision: Preparing for District 218
A message from Dr. Marilynn Vaughan, Program Quality Director, District 66

Happy New Year, Toastmasters! One of the great advantages we have as Toastmasters is that we experience two new years — July 1 and January 1. July 1 allows us to set the vision, goals, and momentum for a distinguished club and district year, and January 1 allows us to reflect, refocus, renew, and continue building on that vision with purpose and passion.”

As Toastmasters International District 66 and District 29 prepare to become District 218 on July 1, we are entering more than a new program year — we are stepping into a new chapter of growth, leadership, learning, and possibility.

Change can feel exciting, uncertain, hopeful, and challenging all at once. Yet Toastmasters has always been a place where people grow by embracing new opportunities: a first speech, a first leadership role, a first evaluation, or a first courageous step outside of their comfort zone.

This season reminds us that growth requires movement.

As clubs prepare for officer transitions, this is the perfect time to intentionally pass the torch with encouragement, clarity, and care. One of the greatest gifts current officers can give their successors is not simply information, but insight. Take time to complete a transition document and share:

*club traditions
*important contacts
*best practices
*challenges
*lessons learned

Leadership is strongest when wisdom is shared, not stored.

Just as many people prepare for a new calendar year in November and December with reflection and goal setting, this is our opportunity to prepare for a new Toastmasters year with purpose and vision.

This is also an ideal time for clubs to complete the Moments of Truth program together and use it as a meaningful conversation starter for the Club Success Plan. What are we doing well? Where can we grow? How do we strengthen the member experience? How do we create meetings that are engaging, welcoming, educational, and transformational?

The introduction of Vintage Paths earlier this year, ongoing Pathways enhancements, and new club officer training opportunities remind us that lifelong learning remains at the heart of the Toastmasters experience.

District 218 will be built one conversation, one club meeting, one evaluation, one Pathways project, and one encouraging leader at a time.

Together, we have an opportunity to honor the legacy of Districts 66 and 29 while building something even stronger for the future.

The next chapter is waiting.

Let’s step into it together — prepared, empowered, collaborative, and ready to grow.

Together We Are Stronger. Together We Are District 66.

With heart, purpose, and vision,
Dr. Marilynn Vaughan, DL5, TC4

Great seeing everyone at the conference!

June 30th is not here yet — there is still time for clubs to become Distinguished! Some clubs may only need a few more members, while others are just a couple educational awards away from reaching their goals.

Be sure to review the two available club building incentives highlighted below and take advantage of every opportunity to finish strong.

If your club needs help, ideas, or support, please reach out. Sometimes a fresh perspective, membership drive idea, or educational push can make all the difference.

Let’s work together and help as many clubs as possible cross the finish line successfully!

Report from District 66 Annual Conference – May 1-2 in Charlottesville

More than 100 Toastmasters from around the state converged at the Doubletree in Charlottesville for out last Conference as District 66.

Marilynn Vaughan and Vicky Lyle provided leadership to the team that created this memorable event. THANK YOU!

Friday night opened with Receptions for the Distinguished clubs and Networking. This was followed by a keynote speech from Mark Brown and then the always exciting Table Topics Contest.

Saturday morning included a breakfast for attendees and the traditional banner parade where clubs carried their banners with all their ribbons through the meeting space. Then we were welcomed by the mayor of Charlottesville and an Albemarle County supervisor.

After Mark’s speech, 3 concurrent educational workshops were provided. After a tasty buffet lunch, 3 different educational workshops were provided. The afternoon wrapped up with a Learning Lab about how to properly use AI in Speechwriting.

Mark gave us yet another fascinating speech before the plated dinner, then clubs and individuals were recognized. Our newest Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Jana Lieberman enjoyed the traditional DTM walk with her fellow DTMs

The night wrapped up with the inspiring International Speech Contest. Scroll down for the winners of the International and Table Topics Speech contests.

Next year’s convention will include all of us who are part of District 66 now as well as members from District 29. We hope you can join us!

Joan Bowling served as the Conference Emcee

Amanda Albright served as the contest chair.
John Jones was the Chief Judge
Charles Gates was the Contest Chair

Mark Brown, World Champion of Public Speaking (1995) was our keynote speaker.
Here are some of his nuggets for speech contestants:
*Stop giving speeches, start giving experiences
*Craft a message with a long shelf life
*Serve your audience
*When you are selective you are effective
*”The primary goal of any story is to elicit emotion” (Michael Hauge, Hollywood story coach)
*Bring your whole self to your audience
*Think about how you can replace some words with actions
*Use the stage – side to side, front to back. Stand your ground to deliver key points. Map it out in advance.
*Gestures are an extension of you
*Props are visual aids, don’t let them take over

Traditional New Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) walk – welcomed by fellow DTMs

Here is some feedback from a few new DTMs this year:

Jana Lieberman (newest DTM)
Question – What soft skills did earning a DTM help you develop?
Answer – Some soft skills I developed while earning my DTM include leadership, listening and problem solving. Being the Toastmaster of the day or a club officer helped me with leadership. Evaluations helped me with listening and filling meeting roles showed me how to problem solve
Sal Asad, DTM
Q – What keeps you as a long term member and leader in Toastmasters?
A – Toastmasters has changed my life – I enjoyed going from a leader to a service leader. My Toastmasters is a 2-way street. The more you Give, the more you Get.
John Jones, DTM
Q – What was your favorite activity on the road to earning a DTM and Why?
A – Completing the projects associated with the DTM process? Each project provided knowledge and growth in the learning process.
My favoirte DTM project was conducting a workshop for Senior Citizens on how to protect themselves from scams and becoming a taget!
This project was so worthwhile and much needed!!
Venus Wilmer, DTM
Q – You’ve earned more than one DTM, what advice would you give someone who aspires to earn a DTM?
A – One goal at a time gets it done before you know it.
Don’t make the projects overly complex, don’t wait to be ready and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Say yes, when opportunities become available.

Lamees Abourahma, and Tanya White-Deyo also earned a DTM in the 2025-2026 program year.

CONGRATULATIONS to the International and Table Topics Speech Contest Winners!

“The first result of speech training is self-discovery.”

Clubs from District 66 are featured in the May Toastmasters International Magazine! Genworth sponsors the Expressions and Generally Speaking Toastmasters Clubs. They established a quarterly employee-leadership chat program that provides corporate leaders an opportunity to share their own stores. It has resulted in better relationships across the company several new members. Read more here.

Save the date! Aug 8 for officer training –Toastmasters New Officer Training has evolved — and the new format brings even more value to club leaders!

In the past, officer training often focused mainly on reviewing duties and responsibilities for each role. While helpful, it could sometimes feel like a checklist of tasks.

The new revamped training goes beyond just “what to do.” It focuses on leadership development, real-world club success strategies, problem solving, member engagement, retention, Pathways support, and collaboration between officer teams. Officers are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another’s experiences.

The updated approach is more interactive, practical, and designed to help clubs thrive in today’s environment — whether meetings are in-person, online, or hybrid. Officers leave with tools, resources, and actionable ideas they can immediately bring back to their clubs.

The goal is simple: better trained officers create stronger clubs, stronger member experiences, and more opportunities for growth and success.

LEVEL UP and WIN Deadline has been EXTENDED:
From Level to Lanyard: The Pathways Spring Sprint!

Between February 1 and June 15, we’re celebrating your Pathways progress with a fun and rewarding opportunity!! More details are here

The Reward?: a Toastmaster Lanyard and an Outstanding Member pin

The SYNERGY between District 29 and District 66 will create a stronger district to better serve our members.

Speakers Corner

Vocal Variety by the Professionals

We all have made strides to sound more interesting in our vocal variety. After noticing vocal variety greatness recently, I know I shouldn’t stop working on my vocal variety.

At the District 66 Conference, we were graced by a true pro with Mark Brown, the 1995 World Champion of Public Speaking. Mark has a voice that is captivating to hear with its power, cadence, and slight accent. When hearing a voice that captivates, one might mistakenly think that voice is all something one is born with. I think you can develop your voice with some deliberate effort to sound more pleasant or commanding.

Think of Joan Bowling’s voice as she did the Toastmaster role at the conference. She is very engaging. Think of Gayle Turner’s rich sound when he leads training.

Mark Brown, Joan Bowling, and Gayle Turner are good examples of a level of vocal variety, quality, cadence, richness, and clarity we should try to attain. Mark Brown played his vocal variety like a virtuoso playing an instrument. He slowed to a pause using his deep tone to dramatize his storytelling and galloped off with sounds that painted the story in our ears. I know I have a long way to reach that man’s mastery.

Think of your own vocal variety and decide if you have done all you can do. I’m newly excited to get busy with vocal variety in ways I haven’t tried. Won’t you join me?
